Ship preservation and conservation at the wharf dominates our centre when it comes to space.
Building new and restoring old clinker built small boats in one off our workshop, rope making in our ropewalk and the smithy are workshops that all are open for our guests to experience.
We rehabilitate socially disadvantaged youth.
Apprenticeships, museum management, camp schools and activities related to tourism are also important activitiesatthe centre.
HFS is one of three national ships preservation centres appointed by the Directorate of Cultural Heritage. HFS owns and operates the Hardanger s loop Mathilde. The Centre is located in Norheimsund, Hordaland County, some 70 kilometres from the city of Bergen on the west coast of Norway. The Centre has 60 employees and a turnover in 2011 of approximately NOK 32 millions. 14. 000 guests visited the Centre and the Hardanger Sloop Mathilde in 2011.
All this started with a wild idea off restoring an old ship and sail it with youngsters. It has grown to a tremendous force regarding maritime rehabilitation in Norway. That is a fairytale."
